Preschooler’s Homemade Lunch Replaced with Cafeteria “Nuggets”

A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.

The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs — including in-home day care centers — to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.

When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones.

The girl’s mother — who said she wishes to remain anonymous to protect her daughter from retaliation — said she received a note from the school stating that students who did not bring a “healthy lunch” would be offered the missing portions, which could result in a fee from the cafeteria, in her case $1.25.

“I don't feel that I should pay for a cafeteria lunch when I provide lunch for her from home,” the mother wrote in a complaint to her state representative, Republican G.L. Pridgen of Robeson County.

When the girl came home with her lunch untouched, her mother wanted to know what she ate instead. Three chicken nuggets, the girl answered. Everything else on her cafeteria tray went to waste.

So our government knows best, right?  I can't help but think how humiliating that would have been for the little girl as well as the mother. What was wrong with a turkey and cheese sandwich? But the gestapo decided they would serve the kid chicken nuggets instead, yeah, like that's healthy.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with what she packed for her little girl.  School lunches are expensive for those, like myself, that have to pay it.  And let me tell you, it is hurts our budget.  We literally pay correction $80 a month for our boys school lunches. Why?  Because 88% of the kids in my boys school, don't have to pay for theirs. But since we hit just a teeny, tiny bit higher bracket in income, we get screwed.  Really makes me mad.

Is this what this country is coming to? Our government becoming the food police?  How much more of our freedom is the Obama administration going to take? This is  FASCISM. Whether you want to believe it or not.  Obama believes himself to be a dictator and people are continually allowing him and his pathetic wife to dictate what we can and cannot eat.

I miss the good old days of free government cheese.

Angel, you, too!!

dmarks, boy that's the truth.

The government solution will be to privice free lunches to everyone. In our local school systems, all kids below a certain economic level get free breakfasts and free lunches.

The Obama approach should naturally be free lunches for everybody.

I think I'm going to be sick.

Nice blog, Leticia.

I heard this on Rush Limbaugh today and I could not believe it (well, actually I could because the left is so stupid). There is nothing wrong with a turkey/cheese sandwich, banana, juice, and chips.

Another caller at Rush said that the school did the same thing to him because he did not include milk in his son's lunch. He said his son would not drink milk. The school told him to send the milk anyway and they would throw it away each day. He said do you know how much a gallon of milk costs?

That is retarded. It wasn't about the child actually eating/drinking the food, it was about the parent being obedient to government and sending the milk to school, even if it ended up in the trash.

Right Truth

Give the Obama progressives a few more years and they will be taking our children from us so they can completely indoctrinate them without our interference.

Read Plato's Republic...

That's a more nutritious lunch than I usually have.

What if the kid's parents are vegan? Then it's really gonna fly.

Obama, Silverfiddle?

This was a state employee down in cracker land.

Is that really true?

Leticia, c'mon, let's have it! Who are you now backing for the GOP nod??? Are you in the Sanitorium???

Turkey and cheese is not healthy? Give me a frigging break with this BS.What does a Chicken Nugget have that a banana and an apple juice doesn't? This is just insane.

Leticia said...

Bob, welcome! I get irritated having to fork out all that money because the schools won't accept what I would like to serve my kids.

Debbie, I can't believe the school told that caller to send the milk and then they can throw it out?? That's insane! But then this whole USDA BS is. And we have Michelle Obama for this crap!

Silver, that has crossed my mind several times. And it is a great concern. Remember Hitler taking the youths from their parents?

Ducky, I hadn't even considered vegans, and my boss is one. She abstains from all processed foods, milk, dairy products etc. I wonder what they would have said to her, since her own daughter is a vegan? Good question.

Jersey, it really is. Research it. And I am very aware, since I have no choice but to pay for boys' lunches. Can you imagine if I sent them to school with Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?!! The poop would hit the fan. I am supporting Santorum, if you must know.

Lisa, chicken nuggets are disgusting, granted my boys love them, but they are not as nutritious as turkey. Idiots!

Jersey McJones said...

Well, Leticia, it sounds like that NC inspector is a moron. That's the problem here.

As for Santorum - PLEASE KEEP SUPPORTING HIM! I want Obama to win this year.

We can no longer 'afford' to tun over our children to the govt-schools-where are indoctrinated-and intimidated-
Thus-I chose to Homeschool (early '80's) even though I am a 'certified' teacher and had taught -10 years- in the public schools-in the '70s-I saw what was coming then-the basics slowly giving way to PC-

Leticia said...

Ha! Ha! Jersey.

Carol, there is no way I can quit working to homeschool my boys. We need both incomes to survive as it is.

And private schools, even Christian ones are too expensive. One was asking for $4,000 a year per child. Yeah, right!

Jersey McJones said...

Leticia, thank you for proving a poignant point. Not everyone can home school their kids. Perhaps only those how can should be able to have kids, as far as the right is concerned.

Leticia said...

Jersey, we are in agreement. And I am probably one of the few conservatives that is totally against homeschooling for many reasons.

But one of the main reasons is money. We simply could not survive with just my husband's income.

The mother wishes to remain anonymous to protect her daughter from retaliation.

A wise decision, but a very sad commentary on what our society has sunk to.

The food police force is gaining ever more power and, thereby, usurping the parental domain.

Yet, it is the right that pushes to improve public education, while the left acts in a very reactionary fashion and blocks reform. Mostly for the simple reason that there are organizations that thrive on plundering money from the school systems, and the Dems are in their back pockets.

That's the glorious liberal world for you, faceless bureaucrats deciding what you should do, what you should feed your children, what you can tell them..... the list only gets longer.

Get angry folks and remember it come voting day, I want Obama to lose this year. That's the only way this sort of liberal fascism can be beaten back.

RWT, Amen to that!

Leticia, it seems that not enough Americans care any more about what is going on, that is why we are losing our country. All the majority of Americans care about, besides sex and feeling good, is getting as much "free" stuff from the government as they can.

Abouna, I saw a poster on Facebook that basically said the girl's mom had to pay for her chicken nuggets but the condoms are free. Sick!
