Kansas church agrees to not protest Arizona funerals

Associated Press logo small 2KANSAS CITY, MO - A Kansas church known for picketing the funerals of American troops now says it won't protest at the funerals of victims of the shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona.

Shirley Phelps-Roper of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church says its members will avoid today's funeral of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green in exchange for live interviews on radio shows in Canada and Arizona.

The church also pledged not to picket the funerals of the five other shooting victims after a nationally syndicated radio show agreed to give them air time.

Westboro church members picket high-profile funerals to promote their belief that God is punishing America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

In the wake of the church's original plan, lawmakers in Arizona on Tuesday passed emergency legislation to outlaw picketing within 300 feet of funeral sites

The members of this church are a disgrace and should be horsewhipped. They are not following the Lord's example, they do not walk in love and they most certainly DO NOT represent Christianity or Jesus Christ.

This pathetic excuse for a church is nothing but a cult that craves media attention, and what I find most despicable is that they target funerals. They are a vicious and heartless group of scum that prey on people who are suffering and dealing with such tremendous loss.  Instead of picketing and protesting they should be comforting the hurting.

It is very difficult not to hate those sick sob's.

Best not to give them the attention they crave. I wouldn't lose sleep if some big burly bikers were to pay them a visit to arrange some free dental work. Call it healthcare reform if you will.

I would be on the sidelines cheering the bikers on!

Do you have reality TV series like "big brother" in america? Put them in the sealed house, and then turn off the cameras.

Imagine how a grieving family must feel when these hate mongers from WBB arrive on the scene?

WBB has no sense of decency. Period.

Media whores by any other name...somehow, I believe that the Almighty has a special punishment planned for these people.

Angel, they have absolutely no shame or guilt. I would love to see them disappear.

Jez, I believe we do have Big Brother, and after sealing the house we would need to fill it with non-venomous snakes and spiders. You know just for fun. Too mean?

AOW, I don't even want to imagine what those grieving families are feeling. They are not allowed to mourn in peace.

William, I would imagine so. What they are doing goes against all principles in the bible.

Yeah they had to be bribed by Mike Gallagher, to have them on his show.

The only reason they agreed not to protest was because they were offered airtime on the radio to air their grievances. It was not because they were being so considerate. It is hateful Christians like them that give us a bad name. What do they not understand when the Bible states, "hate the sin, not the sinner?" Pathetic!
