Congress to be told of 60-billion US-Saudi arms deal

WASHINGTON (AFP) – In the largest US arms deal ever, the administration of US President Barack Obama is ready to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia worth up to 60 billion dollars, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The newspaper said the administration was also in talks with the kingdom about potential naval and missile-defense upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more.
The administration sees the sale as part of a broader policy aimed at shoring up Arab allies against Iran, the report said.
The 60 billion dollars in fighter jets and helicopters is the top-line amount requested by the Saudis, even though the kingdom is likely to commit initially to buying only about half that amount, the paper said.
In its notification to Congress, expected to be submitted this week or next, the administration will authorize the Saudis to buy as many as 84 new F-15 fighters, upgrade 70 more, and purchase three types of helicopters -- 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and 36 Little Birds, The Journal noted, citing unnamed officials.
The notification will set off a congressional review. Lawmakers could push for changes, try to impose conditions or block the deal altogether, though that is not expected, the paper said.
Earlier media reports said that to assuage Israel's concerns, the Obama administration has decided not to offer Saudi Arabia so-called standoff systems, which are advanced long-range weapons that can be attached to F-15s for use in offensive operations against land- and sea-based targets.
Muslim sympathizer president decides that he is going to aid a Muslim nation with missile capabilities (upgrades), fighter jets and helicopters.
Islam is practised by all Saudis and governs their personal, political, economic and legal lives. Islam was born in Saudi Arabia and thus is visited by millions of Muslims every year.  This means no other religions or churches would ever be allowed on their soil.  In my opinion, this means that everyone who is not practicing the religion of Islam would be considered their enemy, right? But Obama, doesn't seem to care about that, he is willing to arm them to the hilt.  Where do his loyalties lie?  It is not with the United States.
Furthermore, if you recall back in May of 2010 Obama and his administration demanded severe pay cuts to our military personnel.  Please tell me how people still support this radical lunatic?
Israel and every non-Islam nation should be very concerned with this turn of events.  We should be worried.  I most certainly am.

How long do you suppose it will take before those weapons are used against us?

What Obama is really doing is giving aid and comfort to those who want to destroy Israel and us.

I heard today on Fox News that Obama gave assurances to Israel that those weapons will NOT be used against them. Yeah sure, and who in their right mind can believe Obama? Why didn't he go ahead with the arms deal to Israel that was started under the G.W. Bush administration? He canceled that deal.

I hate to speculate Abouna, but the way things are going right now for the US, it is closer than we all may think.

Obama, Pelosi and Clinton have been pushing so hard for Israel to give up their rightful land, this only confirms that Obama is NOT a friend of Israel.

I would also like an answer to your question.

The Saudis will pay for this, we're not giving them the stuff.

Still, this is where we find ourselves: Arming and defending people who hate us.

"Protect the oil" is BS! Whichever stinking group would end up dominating that oil would have to sell it on the open global marketplace.

I wish we would all wake up to this fact so we can stop being their slaves and leave them to practice their hideous grotesqueries on one another.

What we've forgotten over the years is they hate each other as much as they do The Great Satan.

They were routinely killing one another before we arrived. We should get out and let them get back to it.

I can only hope that there is a good result in November. Obama is fast approachin lunatic status (if he isn't already) with all of this.

it's not aid, it's a sale. I dislike the arms trade, I think it's almost impossible to participate ethically, but this export will help your economy.

"everyone who is not practicing the religion of Islam would be considered their enemy, right?"
I don't think George Bush Snr. found that to be the case when a combined SA US force repelled Iraqi troops in the first Gulf war for example.

"Why didn't he go ahead with the arms deal to Israel that was started under the G.W. Bush administration?"
maybe because the Israelis have a habit of using the weapons they buy a bit clumsily? At least Amnesty thinks so.

Silver, yes, the Saudi's will pay but our government is advancing the armament and equipping them to hurt our soldiers, Israel and whomever they wish. This is a huge mistake. If they decide to do it to themselves internally, great! I would object to that. I just don't want to see any more Americans or any allied nation injured or killed.

Patrick, too late, he's there.

Jez, it is aid now and a sale later. Our government is advancing the armament before they pay. We should not equip a country is hell-bent on destroying other nations to gain world power. Believe it or not I disagreed with President Bush on this matter and voiced it quite loudly.

Israel is not clumsy with weapons they are, in fact, the best in my opinion, on warfare. If they don't defend their nation, which is smaller than the state of New Jersey, then they would be completely annihilated from existence. They have enemies on all sides.

And they have always have come to our aid, can we say the same about Saudi Arabia? Sure they sold us oil but that is not aiding in a time of war.

The reasons these things occur are, to be honest, well above our knowledge could ever comprehend.

Amnesty described the recent Israeli attack on Gaza as disproportionate and indiscriminate, which I paraphrase as "clumsy". If anything that word is too kind to the IAF.

Of course, I'd describe the rockets launched from Gaza as clumsy too; in fact I'd use far worse adjectives than that. There's a big difference is in the quality of the weapons, with the American-built weapons killing over a thousand people, the shoddy Palestinian rockets just 13. In these days of mega-inflation, it is maybe worth reminding ourselves that 1000 is a big number. Also, it is against international law to fire white phosphorous into populated civilian areas -- if using it in that way isn't "clumsy", surely getting caught at it is.

Hate to say it, but this is one of those, he's-a-bastard-but-he's-our-bastard choices that obongo's stupidity has forced the world into.

Now that the world has weaseled around and allowed iran to go nuclear, they now have to get the rest of the stupid 7th century savages armed to the teeth to counter iran.

MK, spot on my friend. It is a travesty.

agree with MK, Iran should not have been allowed to enrich her own uranium.
