With each day, debate on the Reid bill produces more and more opposition to this egregious power grab and attempt to place Washington in charge of your health care. So far, those who have come out against the bill include hospitals (including the American Hospital Association), 250,000 actual doctors, the Mayo Clinic, the AFL-CIO, National Federation of Independent Businesses, US Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, National Retail Federation, most governors, and most importantly, 61% of voters!
So again, who does support this bill? Simply, it's a coalition of the unwilling. And the so-called Reid compromise that was announced Tuesday evening moves us even further toward a government takeover. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) said, "Expanding Medicare is an unvarnished, complete victory for people like me. It's the mother of all public options." Adding that it "would perhaps get us on the path to a single payer model."
Of course, the all-important details of such a compromise remain elusive to say the least, including whether Reid even has the support he claims. According to many Democrats in the room when the so-called compromise was reached disagree:
Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE): "I haven't signed on to the proposal."
Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI): "I do not support proposals that would replace the public option."
Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA): "There's no specific compromise. There were discussions."
Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR): "Sending the bill to the CBO was about all the ten Senators agree to do."
Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT): "My opposition to a government-run insurance option, including any option with a trigger, has been clear for months and remains my position today. Regarding the Medicare buy-in proposals that is being discussed, we must remain vigilant about protecting and extending the solvency of the program, which is now in a perilous financial condition."
Who supports this bill?
This fight's not over. Join the fight on December 15 for our Code Red Rally to make sure your Senator knows you oppose passing legislation that will bring higher taxes, increased premiums, and lower quality health care. Senators need to realize opposition is real and intense.
The current Reid bill puts politics before patients. No one can even identify a reason to support this bill outside of the obvious and sinister Washington power grab. Don't let it happen.
